Tramadol, sold under the brand name Ultram is an opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. Per the information obtained from Wikipedia and other reliable sources indicates that, when taken by mouth in an immediate-release formulation, the onset of pain relief usually occurs within an hour. The common side effects are: constipation, itchiness and nausea. Severe side effects may include seizures, increased risk of serotonin syndrome, decreased alertness and drug addiction. A change in dosage may be recommended in those with kidney or liver problems. It is not recommended in those who are risk of suicide. While not recommended in women who are breastfeeding.
An augment alarming phenomenon of tramadol drug abuse has been demonstrated on several platforms by distinct analysts and scholars, with the sole aim of finding the lasting solution to this peril. This has triggered my DNA to express my sentiments on such sequel to help facilitate the good findings which will alert the youth of the day who out of ignorance lack the fair knowledge about the implications of abusing tramadol through your candid newspaper.
It has become conspicuous to all human, of this addictive synthetic painkiller that studies claim is a powerful killer remain unregulated on the recommendations of the World Health Organisation; helping spread abuse in the youth of the developing countries. The potential use of tramadol is enormous. It could mainly be used under medical prescription to treat, for example, a severely wounded victim of an accident and the likes. But, it is quite unfortunate the incorrect is prescribed and presented by the youth.
The unconsolidated little survey I conducted amongst some Hand Truckers (Truck pushers) and Head Porters (Kayayei) around some area of Kejetia-Kumasi in the Ashanti Region is an indication that, tramadol drug abuse is very rampant. On a scale of one to ten, about seven of them made it clear how tramadol has contributed immensely to their day-to-day drudgery work according to them. These alleged users of tramadol had always contributed to its popularity and massively used especially as remedy for difficult work due to the conveying of heavy loads for quite long journeys, while other males used it as remedy for premature ejaculatory function and for extended orgasm and increase sexual pleasure, as promoted and advertised by peers.
These people are careless enough to abuse tramadol without taking into deliberation the severe implications which may include: physical dependence and withdrawal syndrome. These include both symptoms typical of opioid withdrawal and those associated with SSRI withdrawal; symptoms includes numbness, tingling, paresthesia and tinnitus. Psychiatric symptoms may include hallucination, paranoia, extreme anxiety, panic attacks and confusion.
Very interesting but really pathetic statement released by some males among them was that, “sometimes we fell very content to imagine some heavy loads as small as the ant and we feel comfy to carry them without experiencing ache”. But the later implications were said to be normal headache and constipation according to them.
Bringing it close to the field, one can also identify that, the negligence of the Food and Drugs Board Authority and the Ghana Pharmaceutical Council has served as the fuel for Pharmacies which are not licensed to sell prescription drugs such as tramadol to sell them as part of the drugs classified as, Over-The-Counter (OTC) medicines, which are the sole approved drugs by the Food and Drugs Board to be sold in such pharmaceutical shops. And this makes such drug readily available even on the cheapest market to these ignorant people.
It is really pathetic and heart-breaking to hear the undoubtable fact that, the little effort laid by the Council to trace and arrest some of these Pharmacists gets to no avail due to political influence.
Now, owing to the direction of eliminating this canker, my coherent suggestions to the Food and Drug Board Authority and the Ghana Pharmaceutical Council: I humbly appeal before your diligence to have a joint force by making proper adjustments in the law which will permit the Pharmaceutical Council to operate under the Food and Drugs Board Authority to help deal with the issue of political influence. I unpretentiously request that dissemination of proper information specifically on the side effects of abusing tramadol will do. With all modesty, the right measures should be adopted in set to maintain an equitable distribution of drugs to various classified drug categories to help reduce its availability on the cheaper markets. I believe and hope strongly that the mother Ghana we always dream to achieve requires a change of attitude by all, by virtue of not being corrupt in our own unique ways.
