Statistics Canada released the data for crimes reported to police in 2018. Incidents in 2018 have declined from 360 in 2017 to 345. However, there was much more significant drop when looking at the data for other minorities. Black people saw hate crimes dropped by 15 percent to 283 while crimes against Muslims went done by a staggering 50 percent to 173.

The Canadian police responded to 2,073 hate crimes in 2017 and to 1,798 in 2018.

The CEO of Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Shimon Koffler Fogel, said that while it is encouraging that there is an overall decline in hate crimes against Jews. The more alarming takeaway is that hatred against Jews persists and is rising globally.

B’nai Brith Canada President Michael Mostyn has said that the numbers have revealed that there is still an “urgent concern” over hate crimes against Jews.

Data released by Statistics Canada on Monday finds that Canadian Jews were the most targeted group for hate crimes in 2018, a trend continuing from the previous two years.
